Free Tax Preparation Services Offered by Crafton Hills College and IRS for Qualified Individuals
Free tax preparation services are now available to individuals and families earning less than $55,000 a year by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sponsored by the accounting program at Crafton Hills College (CHC) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Individuals who need assistance in preparing their personal tax returns. Services will be available on Saturdays beginning February 9 through April 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Central Complex (CNTL), Room 119 on the Crafton Hills College campus (except Saturdays February 16 and March 16.)
The CHC VITA program will also offer Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and free tax preparation services at the Scherer Senior Center in Yucaipa, located at 12202 First Street in Yucaipa, on specific Wednesdays in February through April. These dates and times include:
- February 13 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- February 27 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- March 27 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- April 3 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The VITA program is provided free by volunteers who are CHC students. These students have completed a rigorous IRS-sponsored training and are certified by the IRS to provide free basic income tax assistance including free electronic filing.
Taxpayers will need to bring a number of items to either VITA site to receive assistance on their returns including proof of identification/photo ID and Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents. It is exceptionally important that each person use their correct Social Security Number (SSN), preferably the original Social Security card. If you, your spouse or your dependents do not have an SSN, you should complete Form SS-5, Social Security Number Application and submit the form to the nearest Social Security Administration Office. If you, your spouse or your dependents are not eligible to get a SSN you may need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). A Social Security office can advise you on how best to proceed with this process.
No appointment is necessary for Saturday tax preparation services at CHC. Free parking is available to taxpayers on campus; the closest parking lot is Lot E.
